The project “Pixel Twins – integrating Earth’s surface into the internet of things” aimed at defining small fragments of the earth’s surface (“pixels”) and integrating different data sources. Earth observation (EO) data provided by ESA is combined with data from local IoT sensors. The combination of EO and IoT data provides better data quality and enables new fields of application.

This approach has been evaluated in two different use cases: Smart farming and photovoltaics. The main goal was the demonstration of the improvement by combining spatially continuous but temporally discrete EO data with spatially limited but temporally continuous IoT data.

The “Pixel Twins” project was supported by ESA via a Discovery element contract (contract number 4000137251).
