eCVT – Electric continuously variable transmission for municipal vehicles
Whisper-quiet municipal and emergency vehicles
Ever stricter legislation on pollutant and noise emissions in modern vehicles is not only affecting private transport, but also current solutions in the field of municipal and emergency vehicles. CVT transmissions (continuously variable transmission) already allow the speed of such vehicles to be adjusted continuously. For this purpose, a mechanical and a hydraulic power branch are usually used in parallel after the combustion engine (VKM).
In the eCVT project, a more efficient electric power branch with a generator-motor machine pair was developed for a Reform Boki municipal truck instead of the hydraulic one. Thanks to the innovative overall concept, power can be transferred from the VKM to the buffer battery, the traction drive or the power take-off shaft (PTO). This also enables electric recuperation, purely electric driving, electric PTO or booster operation from VKM and electric drive.
The project was carried out as part of the FFG program “Energy Research (e!MISSION), Energy Research, Energy Research” in a consortium with Bitter GmbH, Miba Sinter Austria, AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, Miba Battery Systems, VDS Getriebe, Reform-Werke Bauer , whereby LCM played a central role in the technological core with the design and construction of the electrical machine set. By combining the different competencies of all partners, it was possible to develop an efficient and innovative overall system.
