Durability Assessment of PEM Electrolyser Stacks

One of the most promising technologies for the sustainable production of green hydrogen is proton exchange membrane electrolysis (PEMEL). Despite the already high level of technological maturity, further improvements are needed, such as reducing investment costs and extending the service life of the electrolysis stacks. They consist of over a hundred electrolysis cells that convert water into oxygen and hydrogen using electricity. The service life of the stacks is limited primarily by the degradation of the membrane.
The DuraPEM project aims to extend the service life of PEMEL stacks. In addition to electrochemical degradation, the mechanical degradation of cell components such as the membrane and the porous transport layer is also being investigated. The experimental investigations are supported and supplemented by targeted simulations.
