Smart flange for saw blade monitoring
Integrated sensors and edge functionalities enable real-time condition monitoring during operation
Modern condition monitoring systems often have to fulfill contradictory requirements: On the one hand, components should be monitored as precisely as possible, while on the other, the methods used must be efficient, robust and as non-invasive as possible.
As part of a cooperation between the Linz Center of Mechatronics (LCM) and TYROLIT Construction Products GmbH, precisely this challenge was addressed. Together, the partners developed a demonstrator for the intelligent monitoring of rotating saw blades during operation: the “Smart Flange”.
The smart flange integrates sensors for tool identification and condition monitoring directly into the tool holder. This allows large amounts of raw data to be recorded, processed locally and transmitted wirelessly – even under extreme operating conditions.
