Regio13 Projects Drives

As an initiator in the category ‘Research and Technology- and Industry-Related Infrastructure; Expertise Centres, Support of Applied Research’ the company Linz Center of Mechatronics GmbH has been able to make a contribution with a Regio13 project for the State of Upper Austria. The LCM project ‘Sustainable Resource-Conserving Electric Drives Through Maximum Energy and Material Efficiency’ was sponsored as part of the EU programme ‘Regional Competitiveness in Upper Austria 2007‒2013 (Regio 13)’ by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and by federal state funds.

Forschungsland_OÖEuropean_UnionThe purpose of the project was to expand basic research and set up a technology platform in the sector of magnetic bearing mounted and bearingless high-speed drives. The main focus was on basic research for the purpose of optimizing the efficiency of drive systems and on the most efficient use possible of high-grade raw materials.

For several years there has been a perceivable trend in conventional motors: in demand are small motors that deliver at least the same output as large motors. This is particularly the case with high-speed motors used in industrial applications. Lightweight, compact systems that develop their power on account of high rotational speeds instead of large structural volumes, thereby saving weight and material ­costs. The objective was therefore to achieve a massive increase in the mechanical rotational speed and a lightweight construction in order to create sustainable competitive advantages for the industrial location Upper Austria, i.e. competitive advantages for industrial use.

Part of the further development of the following development tools was sponsored within the framework of the project:

  • MagOpt: MagOpt is a general purpose optimizer for optimization based on multiple criteria.
  • X2C: X2C is a software tool for the graphic model-based development and code generation of real time algorithms on microprocessors.
  • HOTINT: HOTINT is free and open source simulation software package for the calculation of complex mechatronic systems with the focus on flexible multibody systems.

The following demonstrators have been created by the project.

  • Bearingless torque motor: The demonstrator shows how the benefits of a bearingless motor can be combined with the properties of a torque motor.
  • Bearingless high-speed motor: With this demonstrator we succeeded in setting a new world record for the rotational speed of bearingless motors.Als Impulsgeber in der Kategorie „Forschungs-, Technologie- und wirtschaftsnahe Infrastruktur; Kompetenzzentren, Unterstützung angewandter Forschung“ sowie  „Stärkung der Forschungs-, Entwicklungs- und Innovationskapazitäten in OÖ“ für das Land Oberösterreich konnte die Linz Center of Mechatronics GmbH, Regio13 Projekte umsetzen. Die LCM-Projekte „Nachhaltig ressourcenschonende elektrische Antriebe durch höchste Energie- und Material-Effizienz“ und „Anwendbarkeit von Hochleistungselastomerwerkstoffen für mechatronische Systeme“ wurden im Rahmen des EU-Programms „Regionale Wettbewerbsfähigkeit OÖ 2007-2013 (Regio 13)“ aus Mitteln des Europäischen Fonds für Regionale Entwicklung (EFRE) sowie aus Landesmitteln gefördert.
