Positioning

Locating participants in a network in real time is essential in the Industrial Internet of Things so that products can interact meaningfully with equipment, machines with tools and vehicles with stock goods. It is only through spatial allocation that goods flows can be optimized, transport routes planned, ergonomics and efficiency improved and new application scenarios created. “Outdoor” has been working for a long time in the form of GPS-based localization and navigation systems, “Indoor” runs via application-optimized localization networks with IIoT devices as nodes.

RF Positioning

The most obvious solution for wireless localization is to use wireless technologies such as Ultrawideband (UWB), Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), WLAN or RFID. A UWB system, for example, provides high accuracy with a high update rate.
The interference factors in industrial situations such as metallic environments or electromagnetic interferences require signal processing measures for a robust system that provides reliable position data.

Optical Positioning

Visible Light Positioning (VLP) technology is based on low-cost LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) mounted at fixed positions, which transmit individually modulated signals at high data rates. The ambient signals captured by photodiodes or cameras allow very accurate positioning with a high update rate that is not affected by electromagnetic interference.

A continuous analysis of the current position data enables the recognition of movement and activity patterns. Depending on the application, it can be determined whether a process is running correctly, whether the animals are healthy, where potentially hidden costs can be optimized or decisions can be automated.

System Integration

All the information provided by a localization system and subsequent processing can be integrated into an enterprise information system (ERP, Enterprise Resource Planning). The corresponding interfaces are required for this.
